Yeah, "Detroit Red" was to separate/distinguish him from other redheaded Black men who operated in that Harlem area.
"Lansing Red" didn't have quite the same ring, and people hadn't heard of that city, so he went with Detroit.

Funny thing was even though I knew the origin of Redd Foxx's name, had never seen a color image of him as a younger man, with red hair. Until recently. Only images were of grey haired Fred Sanford or grey haired in real life.
