Police say a suicidal teen shot himself in the face near Ferguson, Mo., drawing conflicting reports from witnesses who say cops wounded the man.

The 18-year-old was exchanging gunfire with Normandy police officers Wednesday afternoon when he turned the gun on himself, the St. Louis County Police Department said.

That critical blow to his face followed a brief police chase and an attempt to use a Taser, "which was ineffective," the investigating department said.

While pursuing the teen on foot, the officers said they momentarily lost sight of him before they heard an additional gunshot.

"As officers turned the corner, they observed the unresponsive male lying on the ground and rendered first aid. The male was transported to an area hospital where his condition is listed as critical," they stated in a release.

Extremely emotional cell phone video apparently taken near the scene after the shots were fired shows a screaming woman being carried away while repeatedly crying, "They shot my son!"

The video's uploader claims it was filmed moments after police and the wounded man's family "chased him."

A man shot himself in the face while exchanging gunfire with Normandy police officers on Wednesday, the city's police chief said.
A Twitter user who claims to have filmed some of the chaos from a distance shared a video of what she says captures the man and his mother pleading for police not to shoot.

"Don't kill my baby!" a woman is heard screaming in the distance.

The cry is followed by a single pop.

A man is then heard apparently screaming: "Don't kill me. Oh god."

"Please spread the word he did not shoot himself, Ferguson police shot him not Normandy," Nique2X, who uploaded the video, tweeted in all caps with the hashtag #eyewitness.

One Black Lives Matter group has also voiced outrage over the shooting while accusing cops of "huddling around trying to get their story together."

"Protesters get to Paddington at Bermuda right now. Cops shot somebody, according to witnesses. Ferguson Chief Andre Anderson is here," @NotOneDime2015 tweeted.

The City of Ferguson's Twitter account publicly addressed the shooting as well, stating that the St. Louis County Police Department is investigating the shooting but that, "Despite rumors, Ferguson PD did not shoot a suspect."

The shooting comes a little more than a year after Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African American, was fatally shot by a white Ferguson police officer while unarmed, sparking racial tensions across the country

NORMANDY, MO (KTVI) - Police say a man shot himself after an incident near the intersection of Woodstock and Bermuda. Authorities say the officers encountered a suicidal person in Normandy, he fired shots at police and then ran. They say the suspect then shot himself.

According to Normandy Police Cpl. Tameika Sanders, officers responded at around 2 p.m. to the 5800 block of Bermuda for a report of a suicidal subject. The teen was being followed by family members who were seeking help from police and medical professionals.

Sanders said the 18-year-old was uncooperative when police and family members tried to talk to him. He continued walking to the 770 block of Ellington.

When police got out of their vehicles he took a gun from his waistband and began shooting at officers. Sanders said an officer used a taser on the teen. It was ineffective and officers returned fire. The suspect was not struck and fled through rear yards to the 7700 block of Paddington.

Officers momentarily lost track of the teen during the chase and then heard one additional gunshot, Sanders said. Police found the 18-year-old on the ground and unresponsive. Normandy police recovered a handgun lying next to the subject at the scene.

Officers immediately began applying first-aid. He was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition.
