I know it's different eras but it's amazing how starkly different this shyt is from today. In 2015 a guest DJ on a major radio station would play...exactly what everyone else is playing. Fetty swap every 30 minutes, Drake, Chris Brown, Future, bunch of DJ Mustard beats, etc.

The lack of variety today continues to stun me.

Piff. ...I feel your pain

but as somebody whose worked in the radio industry their is a reason for this...,

once The TELECOMMUNICATIONS ACT OF 1996 passed it put pressure on Program Directors to strip DEEJAYS of their CREATIVE FREEDOM

I got my first radio deejay gig in 1990 and I was able to play KRS ONE an urban station but keep in mind our TARGET AUDIENCE back then was, mostly young urban b boys.

Now unfortunately it's predominantly single black females and they ain't trying to hear BREAKBEATS..CUTTING AND SCRATCHING or cutting edge hip hop.

it's all about REPITITIOUS HITS ...

and PRODUCT PLACING aka BRANDING (CIROC..VERSACHE..POLO)

same,with the club's......

THEY DONT EVEN BREAK NEW MUSIC IN THE CLUBS ANYMORE cause they are afraid of clearing out the dance floor....

NO DEEJAY WANTS TO TAKE RISKS THESE DAYS..CAUSE THEY DONT HAVE THE POWER ANYMORE :manny:

They play those records because they have to. Not because they want to or are unable to play other records. I think that is the biggest misconception. If you want variety, pay for XM or stream.

You are talking about guys who DJ on stations that have large corporations and businesses advertising on them that stick to a playlist from a program director as to keep things peachy for them.
