Later this year, we'll probably see Leonardo DiCaprio enter the awards race again with the lead role in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's The Revenant (get a first look right here). But it sounds like he's got another potential awards contender finally coming together after trying to get the project off the ground for nearly two decades. The Crowded Room is a real life drama about Billy Milligan, the first person to successfully use multiple personality disorder as a defense in a court of law. Sounds like a compelling enough story, and making the story more rich is the fact that Milligan had 24 different personalities for DiCaprio to portray.
THR reports the script will be written by Jason Smilovic (Lucky Number Slevin), who is coming off the forthcoming Arms and the Dudes at Warner Bros., and Todd Katzenberg, based on Daniel Keyes' non-fiction book about Milligan from 1981. The trial sees Milligan charged with robbery and the rape of three women on the Ohio State University campus. But as the case unfolds, his defense presents the case that two of his multiple personalities were the ones who committed the crimes without Milligan's own knowledge. And the personalities will allow for a showcase of fine acting since they include Adalana, a lesbian taking responsibility for the rapes; Ragen, a Yugoslavian communist who admitted to the robbery; and Arthur, an uptight Englishman. That should make for one hell of a performance.
DiCaprio has wanted to take on this role for awhile, but the project has been dormant for about 10 years after being set up at New Regency and never getting off the ground. But now DiCaprio's Appian Way production banner is coming on board the film to produce with New Regency, the company who also happens to be behind The Revenant and was also involved with Birdman. I'm not sure why it took so long for DiCaprio to board the film as a producer to help it along, but maybe it's just a matter of timing following Birdman and The Revenant that is bringing them and DiCaprio together. We can't wait to see this one.
