NY hip-hop sold out to the establishment and the establishment manufactured East Coast-West Coast beef.
50 signing with Dre was the result. NY hip-hop was finished after 50 got on, it took some time to realize. Ja Rule and 50 might have been a bigger blow to NY hip-hop:

Glad it didn't become serious, good question.

No one man can "destroy" hip hop or NYC.

That narrative was started by a bunch of B level rappers mad that they couldn't capitalize off G-Unit having the hot hand because G-Unit wasn't doing features.

It definitely put friction in the East Coast, 50 was shouting out The Lox in his song then dissed them for making music with Ja. Fat Joe also got caught up in that beef too who also held the East Coast down after Pun died. Dipset was running the mixtape circuit along with others that kept it hot but after 2005 it was over. The south was gaining steam after that.

Check this how come the same songs played in every city and every state? If I’m driving in one state listening to the radio then a few hours later I’m in a different state and the same songs being played how is that possible?

There is a longggg history dating back to the 80s of NY Rappers being jealous, standoffish and territorial

The only difference was 50 got as big as MC Hammer so of course business sides with him.

If you got a hit your label will force radio to play ball. Nobody can stop that

Nobody

NY rappers was soo busy battling who was the nicest. They forgot to make feel good music and that’s how the south snuck in. If you blame 50 you gotta blame every other NY rapper too cuz every NY rapper was about bars and who the best. It won’t about just making a good song. That’s how the south came in. They made good songs. Then you had prime Wayne TI Jeezy Luda etc killing it.And NY rappers was talking about mixtapes. If anything Jay and 50 keep y’all alive when the south was taking over.
