don't get me wrong. I dig the style and vibe of 90's r&b, and I love me some weeknd n/h but when comparing oldschool r&b from the 60's and 70's to new school r&b its just no contest really..

r&b was all but dead in the 80's, but then hip hop blew up, a contemporary style of r&b called new jack swing was created and the rest was history. hip hop has had a MASSIVE influnece on modern r&b. from the 90's on they were inextricably linked. remember when it was the hot thing to have r&b singers on the hook in hip hop? or a rapper spit a verse on an r&b single? I mean, its still like that, ain't shyt change. nowadays you have r&b singers with profane lyrics, singing glorified punchlines.

would r&b have been better off without the [demonic] influence of hip hop or did hip hop simply give it new vitality?

90s amd early to mid 2k was dope but then white people and surburbanites wanted to start making it .... James Blake, Weeknd, PND, etc

The feminization of men got something to do with it too. Marvin Gaye and Al Green were the farthest thing from suspect.

Not even for nothing, i think so.

You got cats like Trey Songz and Chris and em using the "n" word in R&B music....it's lame as hell....R&B was supposed to be more subtle...these new cats dont have that....I really only support Miguel out of the newest cats. He has it all, pen game, stage presence (leg drop aside), vocals, etc.

When you think about it...

1) RnB and I am talking Boyz II Men, Silk, Shai, Jodeci and etc were just "pop boy groups" like NSync, Backstreet Boyz, Boyzone and etc...But because they were black, they were labelled "RnB"...The same way Justin Timberlake is labelled "Pop" and Usher "RnB"...Yet they all use the same producers...

2) Hip Hop has had a huge impact in ruining music in general...The world has always waited on young talented Black Americans to invent new ways of playing instruments, and inventing new rhythms and etc...The Blues, Rock, Jazz, Soul, Funk and etc...

But now all the young black talent is going to Hip Hop, but hip hop does not require a natural talent to really learn an instrument and master it...So, all the potential great musicians are being washed away in the Hip Hop wave...

I could be completely wrong...

I dont know, groups like jodeci and boyz II men could sing their asses off. their music had soul. they weren't just dancing pin up boys for pre-teen girls; they actually had talent. I hear what you're saying though and agree with your second point

GTFOH

All of the chords and rhythms that exist in the universe have already been used over and over again. EVERY Pop record is based on some old obscure classical composition or jazz piece. Which is why sampling was genius, it mangled that concept. Also, the human voice is a instrument, bruh. This is in part why guys who are good bad singers like Future and Wayne thrive because all of the good rhythms and singing has been worn out.

Not to mention MJ, James Brown or whoever weren't playing instruments. You'e also ignoring people like Tyler The Creator and The Roots who clearly play instruments...

.

Hiphop takes the natural skill to be able to rap, and I think there's a lot more people who can play guitar well than people who can rap well.
Usually there is like what 15-20 dudes out who can rap really well and make good hiphop music..
Production is just due to technology, great rock bands, great pop bands etc all use "digital instruments", some cause it's easier, some cause it's a lot more flexible.
Most of the music produced is by pure musical geniuses, no techniques, no writing music etc.. And then you have a person who can write music, who just copies the productions and puts it on paper which is how they translate it to live music. So why not just write the music and play it with instruments from the beginning? Cause it probably doesn't sound as dope.

It's hard to invent new genres. The ones you mentioned are basically just different spinoffs of Jazz and Blues.
When disco, pop etc was dominating before hiphop in the 80s and 90s, shyt was wack commercially as well. Miley Cyrus is as wack whether it's with a duke like Mike Will or an old school musician. JT was wack when he was working with "old school musicians" and started fukking with "new school digital producers" and became the best commercial pop artist.

I think a better claim is that groups like NSync were just RnB in white face. The black groups you mentioned were updated versions of the Tempations, Stylistics, Jackson 5, etc. Backstreet boys and the like were performing soul music, albeit over cheezy, lifting synths. Pop music just means popular, and white groups are/were able to tap into a much wider and larger base of fans. Same with Justin Beiber.

Its sad, cuz it always required more talent to perform R&b. Yet alot of these new jacks lack the swag to pull in a decent following which will pull the labels to push you. N the one's who DO actually have that flare, rather be rappers instead.

shyt look at these two young r&b jacks that the labels have recently signed and are pushing. These nikkas can moonlight as rappers on the side.

Not even for nothing,

With hip-hop, you can be a tough guy even if you arent one off wax. With R&B, you sort of have to be softer and more in touch with your vulnerabilities.....a lot of cats coming up arent into that.
