In 1989, Joe Montana won his first mvp in a landslide(62% of the vote) after having one of the greatest qb seasons ever. He also led the nfl in passer rating and completion percentage. I believe the passer rating was a then record at the time.
The next year was different though, although the 49ers won the same number of games his numbers fell off. Passer rating down by 13 completion by 9, interceptions doubled, YPA fell off too. He won the award but it was one of the more controversial ones in history and he only got 32% of the voting share.
This time there were qbs that year who outperformed him in several advanced and traditional qb metrics like the guys who finished 2nd and 3rd Warren Moon/Randall Cunningham
Despite Montana having the better team by far between the guys. Moon actually won offensive player of the year which I felt was interesting

I feel like Bruce smith should’ve gotten more consideration this year too. Another problem is, Montana wasn’t the best player on his own offense that year. Rice won the triple crown.
