Buy will taking a stand on a big level bring change and results on a big level?
It's certainly brought awareness to a real issue that has been swept under the rug for too long while the nation carries on as if it is some great bastion of fairness. Consider it an exposal to the world. The best way to get America to do what's right is to shine a bright light on the reality behind the facade. The protests in the UK have been particularly effective in humiliating the body politic into a complete backpedal and in some cases, a tantrum.
Whether Colin's protest forces long term changes to happen isn't really the point. The point of the protest was to raise awareness and then pass the football to us to see what WE do. He only shines a light and WE must make the changes so you are asking the wrong question. The question is "Now that Colin has raised awareness on the issue of police violence in a way that Middle America can't turn away from and will come back if they try to, can WE force long term changes?
Let me ask you a question.
How can mainstream america begin to make right its wrongs and make the proper reparations if there is no consciousness of guilt? Now every pregame people are thinking about this and being forced to confront what makes them uncomfortable or give up something they love. No one is actually going to totally turn off the league for good for a temporary protest. Right now the denial phase is happening but some point there will be admittance and acceptance. Colin placed another hot coal on the head of middle america. They now are complicit in the lead pipes, cte, and other problems us being poor and forced into inner cities for generations with schools based on tax revenues that will never come have resulted in. They created the cauldron, threw us in it and although we can navigate it, they are the only ones who can actually fix the substandard infrastructure both legal and civic in nature, that needs to be in place so we can begin to thrive.
Colin already said if he was signed he would stand for the anthem. His protest is long over but he totally undermined the ideal football fantasyworld many Americans live in on Sundays and introduced a consciousness that won't just go away. He will be remembered as a hero some day much like the civil rights leaders of the 60s.
