From the stuff I learned over the years it was a "we don't always agree but he's my guy" type of deal.

A quote I found from Jesse Jackson when Castro died:
“He was a hero in Africa, Latin America, and North America for those who needed freedom from oligarchic and autocratic oppression,” the Rev. Jesse Jackson said of Castro in a statement about the Cuban leader’s death. “While Castro, unfortunately, denied many political freedoms, he at the same time did establish many economic freedoms — education and health care. He changed the world. While we may not agree with all of Castro’s actions, we can accept his lesson that where there is oppression there must be resistance.”

Then you have the most well known cases of Malcolm X and Mandela giving him huge praise. If there was one thing very clear about castro, it was that he was not down with white supremacy's grasp on people of color at all.

Castro was passionate about his support for Black militants and revolutionaries across the globe not only in the USA via Malcom X

But Jamaica..Guyana..Angola and Grenada not only recieved his support he made sure Cuban presence was there as well to assist with building infrastructure which was met with some suspicion by even some of his black allies...

Such as Michael Manley of Jamaica and Maurice Bishop of Grenada whom admired and was appreciative of Castro's support but DIDNT wanna be seen as little "mini me's of Castro and his full blown Marxist policies...

They wanted to keep thier own identities which was the issue many black militants had with Castro

I'm familiar with this because for a brief time around 1983 when my mother and father was seperated ..i left America with my mother to go live in the Islands when the COLD WAR (Cuba/USSR vs USA..Capitlists vs Marxist) was in full swing

And Castro was trying to make his presence known throughout the carribean which had the USA and the CIA on edge

Castro went to war took money from rich white cubans who were dominating under Cuban capitalism/corruption and used it to give free housing, education, healthcare, etc to poor (black) Cubans. This is why the white Cubans who fled to Florida hate him. Then over the years he supported and militarily backed the oppressed off all the globe, including in Africa. One could say he’s the true definition of a “militant”
