Did Toriyama ever give an explanation for Future Trunks' sword?

I realize Toriyama has been slowly explaining certain things that happened in the series and cover up possible plot holes now that DBZ is getting movies again. Did he ever explain the origins of Future Trunks' sword? In History of Trunks, years later after Gohan's death, dude just has it now all of a sudden.

We know present Trunks got his from Tapion (it's non canon, nikkas I know ), but you think Tapion once showed up in the Future Trunks' timeline and was all like when he saw what was goin on, tossed Trunks the sword and just bounced? I figured Tapion wasn't that strong to begin with (could be wrong), and I'm guessing he wouldn't have been much help against the androids during that time.

It could also explain how Bulma was able to come up with a working time machine.

Maybe Tapion could've played a role in saving the present timeline. Know I'm reaching like hell, but it's a thought and could make for a good side story covering the time they skipped over in History of Trunks. Also, I'm bored at work

Since Piccolo got bodied by the Androids, Kami died and the dragon balls turned to stone. That all happened while Trunks was still a baby where in Wrath of the Dragon he's a kid. So in Future Trunks' timeline Tapion should still be trapped in the music box.

This is correct. These are just Rumors but I've always believed this theory. The sword was an artifact collected by Goku during this travels in the universe before dying of Heart Virus. Once he died, Gohan kept it and was the one that gave it to Trunks and was the first to train him with the sword. Remember when Gohan was younger he trained with a sword himself. Which is why when Trunks was asked he said "I got the sword from someone close". Tapion giving Young Trunks the Sword was just symbolism showing that Trunks will still recieve a sword no matter what timeline.
