In the Silver Lining
My folks never visited Africa. However, they did Kwanzaa literally every year until I graduated high school. The discussion was more about history and being confident about yourself, by knowing your Roots. They kept tight with Africans in our area. Lot of related books they had, that in hindsight, I probably should have read.

They had local newspaper come to the crib, so I was reading it every morning like a Boss Nerd in middle/high school, one of my first forays into geo-political news not on TV. Most of the African related articles were on conflicts/wars: Angola, Mozambique, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Rwanda, Zaire, Algeria at the time.
Rwanda was heavy though, because it was literal genocide, and I remember being long distance shell shocked by it....when Nightline showed a river the color red from blood and bodies bloated and floating.

When I got access to the internet, I was a sponge soaking up knowledge on everything including Africa. As an adult, I want to see Africa develop into the greatness I know it can be. So my folks provided the pro-Africa platform, which made it normal for me to want to explore my African Roots, current events as a teenager, and now what the future might look like.

Funny...because what they were saying about being in touch with your African Roots is part of your self esteem, is exactly what I say up here. African Americans economic quality of life will benefit if we are integrated with the continent. Instead of spiritually/culturally/politically like the 1960s - 1990s, it's time for literal economic connections.
