Roasting is usually sillie shyt that makes everyone involve laugh. Not mean spirited, no ill intent.

Examples:

"Ya head so big other heads float around it"

That's stupid. Usually other person laughs along

"Ya head huge, you're disgusting, you're a freak"

Mean spirited, disgusting behavior. Unnecessary, not funny.

The duration, frequency and intensity of the roast.
But also the cultivation of isolation is another dynamic of bullying as well.
It’s one thing to have an ongoing joke amongst peers and a little back and forth rivalry. That creates acceptance and solidarity.

Bullying works in the opposite fashion. You aren’t joking with them to establish or acknowledge shared inclusion into a social group. You are doing so to create an other or an object of derision, ironically to bond with OTHERS over shared ridicule of someone outside of the social group, thus cultivating the isolation of the object of the roast and solidifying their place as other and lesser.

To maintain the lower status of the object of derision you have to frequently roast them for long periods of time, with increasing intensity. Basically everything they do becomes source material for a joke. Others observe that roasting the object can gain them entrance into the circle so they join in.

There can be very complex psychological mechanisms behind bullying that’s not the same as roasting.

What?! Women can be the WORST bullies. I know my shyt.
