Beyonce is overrated due to her popularity.
Lauryn Hill is a better pure vocalist then her, and even Lauryen is several levels below somebody like Whitney Houston.

People who don't know music don't know how to separate singing ability with fandom and song making ability.

Most people will tell you for example that MJ was a better singer as adult than he was as a kid. But he actually had a much greater vocal range and singing ability when he was in the jackson five. He just made much better music as a grownup and developed much more style to compensate for his voice changing and him losing several octaves of range. Beyonce is similar in the sense that she has a great style and great music that helps compensate for a more limited range, than other singers have. Mariah carey for example can go lower than Beyonce and higher than beyonce with better control on her runs at both extremes

JHud's character was supposed to be the powerhouse but unmarketable singer while Deena was the more submissive, more marketable one who didn't have as good of a voice as Effie. She HELD BACK for the role.

That was the theme of the movie. But you have clearly never been to many plays or musicals before. Go see some plays brehs. The actors still sing their hearts out. Because the performances are supposed to be top tier regardless. They will pretend a singers performance is bad before having an actor singing bad on performance. MJ in the wiz was technically supposed to be goofy on off balance, but his step game was still on another level. They don't dial it in for the sake of accuracy breh. They just pretend
