To be a black man in a corporate environment is to be in the most compromising position ever.
From my experiences in this work environment it really does seem like it's set up for whites to thrive and black men especially to fail.
I wouldn't tell my kids to aspire to work for one of these companies...
- To be one of the few or the only black men in your office in a staff of hundreds of whites
- To be antagonized racially through macro and microaggression by coworkers and bosses and be expect to not react in a way that may compromise your money
- To be watched with more scrutiny than anyone else
- To be the last to be hired and the first to be fired
- To have you income, your livelihood, your roof over your head, your food on your table...your paycheck be decided on how comfortable people are around you.
- Very few black men advance in these corporations due to connections, white privilege, nepotism, and paternalism amongst white men in IVY League organizations and Fraternities
- The higher up you go...the less black people you see...until you are the only black person or one of less than 5.
- The awkwardness and tension that comes from the divide between black professionals and black low wage workers occupying the same space (security, janitors, cafeteria people, etc)
From my experiences in this work environment it really does seem like it's set up for whites to thrive and black men especially to fail.
