Report: Dishonored 2 Reveal Discussed Over Open Live Stream

cor610.jpg

Earlier today, an open microphone during rehearsal caught the discussion of several Bethesda and Arkane employees as they seemingly prepared for tomorrow’s Bethesda Showcase event. The audio recording has since been removed through a Bethesda copyright claim. However, a copy obtained by Kotaku includes, if our ears are to be trusted, co-creative director of the original Dishonored, Raph Colantonio, Harvey Smith, fellow co-creative director on Dishonored, and Bethesda vice president Pete Hines, among other participants. Dishonored 2 is not specifically mentioned, but the conversation and participants lend strong credence to the idea that we may be hearing about Dishonored 2 during tomorrow’s conference.

Bethesda seemed to acknowledge the mistake, with a subsequent tweet that seems to promise more details in store for tomorrow night.

Our Take
It's too bad for Bethesda that it wasn't able to roll out the announcement of Dishonored 2 on its own terms, but the existence of Dishonored 2 has been long rumored. I'm certainly excited to see what the talented team at Arkane has been up to. Keeping major announcements secret during E3 has always been a big challenge, and the advent of live streams only makes things more complicated for big game companies to keep things under wraps.

Dishonored: Definitive Edition includes all of the downloadable expansions (“Dunwall City Trials,” “The Knife of Dunwall,” and “The Brigmort Witches”) from the first game. It will launch on August 25 in North America and August 28 in Europe.

Arkane Highlights How Emily And Corvo Influence Dishonored 2 Story
By Michael Briers 2 days ago

It was a welcome trend seen across numerous games during E3; that of the playable female protagonist. From Horizon Zero Dawn to Keiji Inafune’s intriguing Xbox One exclusive ReCore, developers are finally beginning to open up the playing field to create a more balanced, gender-neutral industry – even if there are some big steps still to take.

Nevertheless, it’s interesting to track, and one studio aiming to shake up its own storytelling formula is Arkane, who has promoted Emily Kaldwin from a typical damsel in distress from the first game into a bona fide lead for Dishonored 2. Taking place a full 15 years after its acclaimed predecessor, Arkane’s sequel will have players choose between Emily and Corvo quite early on.

Talking in an interview with Mashable, here’s what Co-Director Harvey Smith had to offer about the branching narrative.

He’s the one who recommended, maybe you play as Emily for like half an hour and then you get to this pivotal moment where a dramatic thing happens, and you choose at that point whether to continue with Emily or switch to Corvo. And then you’re locked in.

While it isn’t necessarily a branching narrative – Dishonored 2’s story will pan out in the same way regardless of how you side with – both Corvo and Emily’s approach to combat vary significantly. According to Smith, the latter protagonist is lighter on her feet than her older counterpart, fighting with “more finesse” as a result. Not only that, but Emily’s arc as a character and indeed her fighting style will change and evolve throughout the course of the plot.

You can stick to walls, you can yank somebody toward you and assassinate them in mid-air, so you have these synced assassinations in mid-air. It begins to feel different, and it adds momentum. You can run and jump and it has rope physics to it.

Bethesda is yet to detail a firm launch date for Dishonored 2 beyond slating the sequel for a release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2016. The Dishonored Definitive Edition, on the other hand, lands on August 25.

Dishonored 2 is All About Emily, Finesse, and Murder
Dishonored was a neat little game from 2012 about an assassin named Corvo who was sent to jail for assassinating the Empress. Only, he didn’t actually assassinate her and went on the run to find out who would want to smear his good name. Dishonored 2 was announced last month at E3, but Corvo is now joined by Emily Kaldwin, the daughter of the Empress from the previous game.

Speaking with The Guardian about player choice, Dishonored 2’s co-creative director Harvey Smith said he was interested in developing Emily as a central and playable character. In the previous game, she reflected your actions–her art was full of rainbows and sunshine or black crayon monsters depending on your alignment. The sequel jumps ahead by a decade and a half, with Emily having lost her throne and the Empire of Isles going through hell. Now set in the coastal town of Karnaca, 25-year-old Emily and Corvo have to work together to regain her power:

“So it felt like, what happened to that little girl? She was born into privilege, she was marred by this terrible tragedy, and then after that she was raised by Corvo. What would she be like as a 25-year-old adult – as an empress and then an outlaw? It was effortless to find that part.”

This doesn’t mean that she’s a reskin of Corvo. Emily will have her own suite of powers in Dishonored 2, some of which we’ve already seen:

“If you play as Emily it’s all new – she has her own set of powers, her own assassinations and animations, so she feels different, she feels like a finesse character. In the video, we show a power called Far Reach [a teleportation abaility]which can be upgraded in different ways, and it changes your flow through the world and your mobility. Just on a video game level, moving through the world feels different. But if you play Corvo, it’s all this classic stuff, it’s the rat swarms, it’s possession, it’s stopping time – he feels more heavy and brutal, he’s an older guy.”

Dishonored 2 hits the PS4, Xbox One, and PC spring 2016. You gonna play as Emily, or will you return to the familiar boots of Corvo? Let us know in the comments below.
