I know this a male dominate site so most of y’all probably don’t give much of a shyt about the topic but I feel like Disney dropped the ball with Princess and the Frog. The box office for the film is incredibly low compared to other modern Disney princesses and I don’t think it’s just because of her race.

The 1920s New Orleans setting doesn’t lend it self to much magic and it’s grimy for young Black kids to see. The movie kicks off with the mom being a mammy to a White girl who is portrayed as charming and vivacious while Tiana is almost dour. They then go home to what looks like former slave cabins.
Why would you pick a setting that reminds Black kids and parents about Jim Crow and slavery when you could have picked an African kingdom or village?

Her only dream was to open up a restaurant, not to save the world, country, or her people like the lofty goals of most modern princesses. She spends most of the movie as a frog. Her prince was also broke with loose morals and he wasn’t even Black.

I feel like there should be another one. This time with the 3D animation style that kids prefer. The setting should have been set in some mystical, long ago kingdom like most of the other Disney Princess. The writers should also be Black.

Black Panther was juggernaut. Kids love The Lion King and even though they are animals, it still has a lot of African mythicism.

An African princess like Moana or Mulan would be far better for young Black girls than Princess and the frog.

I can see a well intentioned creative wanting to pay homage to the that time period of New Oreleans and African American history and folklore, but yeah, it was a mistake to make the first black princess a Jim Crow era character. Movie had a grim, dreary vibe and despite featuring lots of magic (and a :mjpls: take on voodoo), it wasn't actually magical in the way disney movies are supposed to be, inspiring awe and wonder and fantasy/wish fulfillment. The biggest sin might be the lack of standout memorable music.

That's because there's this line of thinking with them that the only time they can sell a quote "black movie" is to tie it somehow to slavery or the civil rights era. They're fukking stupid.

Walt Disney was a staunch white supremacist.

Exactly. Be black and expect a Business owned by a well known supremacist to make blacks look good in any light brehs.

That being saidm i do think they will come around to actually making Faux disney princess -- a black princess that appears like shes one but not (ah ha its already been done actually). Wokeness, and Faux black empowerment is the rage right now. Just like gucci will let your fave rapper wear and promote their shyt && make plenty money of your self hatred. Just so later on down the road they can "insult" you, so youll boycott them. Same principal applies. They know blacks will line the theater just to see a black princess and right after they get to get them a number on box office hit. Tell you nikkas she isnt a princess.

If you wanna count Marvel since Disney acquired them, Shuri from Black Panther is literally an African princess, and if they were smart they would capitalize on her popularity by highlighting her in future movies.

If you talkin disney animation, then yea i agree, i think it will happen soon anyways

shuri as a character in the mcu is kinda a sneak diss on black panther as a character.
as shuri in the mcu undermines the intelligence and character of the black panther as a hero and intellectual.
i have issue with shuri being made into being the intellect of black panther on film.

they have black panther like he is some aloof dumbass clutz simp, when shuri is there.
i like the premise of the fact black panther.
yet i have real issue with how they nerfed portions of the character to undermine his intellect and heroism.
by then using and playing covert sjw with shuri in black panther.
while never getting over black panther as having a sound intellect, motives and drive.

they even undermined him as a warrior as well.
which is why this next panther movie has a dire need.
to make black panther more intellectually superior in the mcu.
