Kool Herc's Early Hip-Hop DJ System Sells at Auction

The DJ system that had a starring role in the creation of hip-hop sold at a Christie’s auction for $201,600. This gear was owned and used by DJ Kool Herc, who famously spun the breaks at a back-to-school party put together by him and his sister on August 11, 1973, launching hip-hop as we know it.

This system was Herc's main equipment throughout the mid-'70s, with the DJ adding components over time. It includes two Technic SL-1100A turntables, a GLI 3880 Mixer, and a 300-watt McIntosh amplifier with Acoustic speakers and subwoofer cabinets, which helped give Herc the reputation as having the Bronx's most powerful sound system throughout the 1970s.

Other relics from Herc's parties, such as the light rig, fog machine, and several photographs and clothing, were sold at the auction too. With hip-hop now a multibillion-dollar industry, it's only natural that artifacts from the beginning go for as much as fine art
