One song that always comes up when discussing Hip-Hop’s bi-coastal rivalry in the mid-’90s is Tha Dogg Pound’s “New York, New York.” However, in a recent tweet, the track’s producer, DJ Pooh, revealed that this record wasn’t a diss when Kurupt stepped in the booth. However, the masses interpreted it differently. Recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jay-Z even commented on its controversial video in his classic, “Money, Cash, Hoes,” a few years later. “It’s like New York been soft ever since Snoop came through and crushed the buildings / I’m trying to restore the feelings; fukk the law, keeping dealing / More money, more cash, more chilling.

NY NY – Tha Dogg Pound
When @kurupt_gotti stepped in the booth this wasn’t intended to be a diss but it was later taken as a diss and we all know the rest. I produced the song and video.

There's nothin' about the lyrics that's a diss... I always took it as Kurupt showing that he could rhyme on the level of all the East Coast MCs...

It's more so the video and the hook that makes it a diss.

I think they added the Snoop kickin over the buildings part after the set got shot up.

Classic / amazing record.

That said, that intro sounds a lot like mockery to me.

Even tho I’m from NY I always found that part pretty funny
NY,NY no

Now NY 87....THAT was a Diss

How about LA,LA?:jbhmm:

ny 87 was definitely a diss…they even mocked the Ny slang in the beginning of that record too…”yo god the heads is trippin out in NY b”
