that is true with Kendrick Lamar but not with DMX
It's true for 99.9% of rappers with mainstream success...
Hip Hop lyrics, for the most part, are NOT well thought out..Rappers think of a clever bar, and place among a whole bunch of bars that are not really
saying anything...
Hip Hop lyrics are similar to pick-up lines, if the fans like your image, then the line is DOPE, if they don't, then the line is CORNY...
You just have to look at the example of Papoose, 80% of what he spits would be considered dope if it was being delivered by Drake, Kanye, Lil Wayne, Jay Z, Nas, J Cole, Kendrick and such...
But because he is Papoose, he is kind of a caricature and parody in the eyes of many internet hip hop fans...
Another example is Canibus...Personally, I can listen to Canibus even if he was spitting over beats made with garbage bins and pots and pans...Because his level of writing is WAY beyond the average rapper...
You can't freestyle a song like Poet Laureate II...That takes a lot of effort and thought process...
And yet when mainstream hip hop fans discuss lyricists, I have NEVER heard Canibus' name being mentioned...
