how much do they get paid? what kinda input do they have at team meetings?

seems like the most useless in-game coaching job in sports

I remember being young, the last player out (who wouldn't bat the next inning, unless they bat around and have a big inning) would stand at 1st and 3rd ...why cant they do this officially in college, minors, majors? saves money, helps our economy

They're coaches and their responsibilities aren't limited to what you see during games.

it can be to provide more USEFUL jobs to people who really need them...even in the stadiums

instead of paying outfielders from the '60s

As far as managing the bases each coach has specific duties. The third base coach provides signs to the batter, and runners on first and second. A first base coach will at time provide signs for a runner on third and is essential in helping runners at first not get picked off by being vocal and alerting them to get back at times. The first base coach also will have a stopwatch at most times, to time the pitchers delivery. If they can figure out how long it takes on average to deliver a pitch home or if they can find a pattern in the delivery it makes stealing bases much easier. Base coaches are also position coaches on most teams. On my squad, I am the head coach but my position focus is with the outfielders, while other coaches work with pitchers, IF, and hitters.

They do more behind the scenes than just wave people around bases. Ned Yost (current Royals manager) was the Braves 3rd base coach for a while.
