do artists necessarily need a local fanbase anymore when they could use the internet ? i feel like you don't necessarily need it anymore. because i heard Joey Bada$$ saying that he used worldstarhiphop to gain buzz on the internet without building a fanbase in BK at first but some BK cats showed him props for that and he built a fanbase in NYC. A$AP Rocky, used Tumblr to build a fanbase. i think he said before that NYC didn't really rock with him until he dropped Pe$o, because they didn't understand his style. now in 2016, he has plenty of fans in NYC.

Combination of both but it's mainly the internet being your main tool. Now a days, all it really takes is ONE soundcloud hit and you too can be on those couches in LA at major label offices. It really is that simple :francis:

But you do need a fan base if you want those labels to sign you. Who will buy your music? Your merch? See you live on tour? and that's why it makes sense to build up locally because you can do these things in your own city on your own, for the most part. A lot of artists get "signed" but they get locked into loans essentially and often can't pay the money back/release music. If you build up locally, it's easier to branch off internationally but there's no right or wrong way to do this anymore. Game has changed.

You say one Soundcloud hit . . but how would someone go about making something a hit on Soundcloud. That doesn't sound so easy

People like to be the first to share or discover new artists and show their friends about them. & I dont know anybody who is dope and going about things the proper professional way who isnt making strides online or in their music career.

That what makes this era one of the best in terms of being discovered.

Try to rap like Future/The Weeknd/Travis Scott/Rae Sremmurd/Drake/Young Thug/PartynextDoor :yeshrug:

That's what all these other kids are doing..... and they getting on

I hate it though because there's no originality but it's getting a pass and people are enjoying it so :yeshrug:

You're going to need a local fan base. Without it, you're basically an artist with 1 billion Youtube views, millions of plays on Soundcloud, but can't sell albums or sell out shows.

I always thought it was crazy that PSY couldn't get a tour booked over here after "Gangnam Style" . . they must've tried because I remember him doing promotional appearances at things like Dodger games. He performs to huge crowds over there in South Korea

i believe Bryson Tiller did that, and it spread crazy.
he didn't just upload it to soundcloud and...voila.....it took off and spread....I can almost guarantee he had somebody on the back end working that record...whether he paid a promoter, or someone did it for him. U don't just upload a dope song and off the rip it starts getting clicks and listens as a new artist

You don't really need a local fan base. There are a few artists that will tell you they didn't really get popping until they left where they were from. David Banner moved to New York and got a deal, Krit moved to Atlanta, Soulja boy was hot on the Internet first, I'm sure there are a few more that I can't think of right now.

With the right media connections you can be everywhere without being local if you know what I mean.

When this happens you always notice how record labels will have their artists open or go on tour with bigger artists to develop that fan base. It happened with Kendrick when he went on tour with drake. Tinashe with Nikki, Action Bronson with Eminem, Lupe with Kanye.

a publicist will help, a promoter with a network etc...... anybody that can get your music posted to blogs with over 30,000 daily visitors, private facebook music groups, popular youtube channels will be able to help get your song quick attention whether on soundcloud or any other platform, but even that takes a consistent monthly budget to make it seem like it happened "Fast"..... its not as simple as "Random artist uploads possible dope song to soundcloud, 2. random people start to click it,like the song and share it, then within it months it organically has 200k views and shares....its wayyy too much music uploaded daily for people to randomly click new songs, unless somebody that has influence advised them to do so and said THIS IS DOPE, PLAY IT
