Do most of these YA authors write stuff just to make movie deals then retire?

I mean I know these people will probably never top their most successful works but it just has me going "That's it"?

Stephenie Meyer wrote the Twilight series and it took off and she's basically done nothing since. Last main title was 2008. Suzanne Collins wrote The Hunger Games series and took off and nothing really since. last main title was 2010. I'm willing to bet Veronica Roth who's young as hell follows in their footsteps now that Divergent took off.

At least J. K. Rowling actually does still write but publishes nothing under that name anymore.

I don't think any of those women started off with that goal but newer ones might. It's like with anything that's hot. They were just writing what they wanted and it turns out that this was an extremely lucrative time to do so. And I think shortly after that, with the movie deals and all the immersion of being a hot author, writing does become a bit secondary.

Movie studios are buying up YA rights left and right ever since Twilight took off. Once that dies down, people will go back to ignoring the genre.

Its funny to me because Twilight as movies were not so hot and the first and third book were ok but the second and 4th were pretty bad and that's what kicked this off. I've seen better YA books than Twilight (I Am Number Four, Vampire Academy, Mortal Instruments) adopted into crappy movies and they've failed to have the same impact.

Still anything that distracts Hollywood from comic book movies is fine by me.

I'm trying to make that movie money..... :takedat:

But I want those royalties too... I would still drop books here and there.

I mean if they pay well to use the rights and give me royalties i aint gonna bytch and moan about it. im gonna enjoy it.

Gang violence...
if they can get sequels, then yeah it might take the incentive out of writing more books. that first movie, while a great paycheck, wont really let you retire unless you can inspire a bidding war. the lucrative back end money only comes after the first movie proves the value.

that being said, i doubt any YA author, at least not a successful one, ever started out with the sole purpose of making movies. they started out wanting to write books.

That Twilight bullshyt was a gift and curse to the YA genre:camby:

...as a 90s kid, I feel salty that series like Fear Street or Final Friends couldn't get the same screen pop:wtb:
