You can’t paint every traveler with the same brush. I worked around the world for 12 years…some of my coworkers stayed in their room after work, some explored the city we were in…and others like me would venture out to other nearby cities or countries.
I always looked for off the beaten path restaurants with no English menus, stay in areas away from tourist traps and ask locals for things to do.
like a pro tip for Japan: Onsens, or bathhouses, are an option for sleep in city areas. The hotels within the city limits can be really pricey. So you go to the onsen after a night of partying, get a night pass, go in the mineral baths, get a massage, eat some traditional therapeutic food in the cafeteria, then go to the sleeping room full of lay flat recliners. Entrance fee + overnight fee is usually $50 or so.
