One of the most important things you have to do when you start a business is figure out who you target market is. What are the demographics ? race, age, income, location, lifestyle etc... This is how you make product and marketing decisions. It seems that most rappers and some R&B artist as well just throw that step out of the window. And they wonder why their records are not selling. We see the same re-ashed concepts over and over. The 90s are done get over it, show me relevant content matter, and production.

If your fans are in their mid thirties chances are they are either married or have kids.
  1. Why will they play your album in their car riding with their kids when you are still screaming you are "about that life" ? (TI)
  2. Why would you still be trying to make club anthems? (Busta)
  3. Why would they want to hear another generic techno collabo with David Guetta ?

Where is the subject that will relate to me today? I love ignant rap as much as anyone but it can't be all there is.

Problem is rappers are not putting themselves in their art. Artists want us to believe that 100% of the time they are only concerned about money, pu$$y, and crack. There gotta be other stuff going on in their lives. Too many rappers are playing a role and the result is garbage music.

Of course they do, labels have a lot of people working for them. Including people who have jobs that include analyzing the market, fan bases, prospective fan base etc.

I think a problem with labels is that the people who work for them might be great in school, some might be ex-investment bankers and shyt like that. But it's harder getting people who just have deep knowledge in music, a resume won't show how deep you can analyze something as "non-academic" as music.

You can have the people trying to utilize the same tactics they use for Juicy J for someone like J. Cole.
That's why imprints are important, management, balls to challenge the suits and shyt like that. Otherwise you'll end up like Wale did on Interscope or worse Jaz in his first deal.
