Op asked whether NHL players have to attend college in order to play. The answer is no. A player only has to be 18 which is what most hockey players are when they finish high school (at least in Canada) anyway. There's no collegiate requirement in hockey, tennis, baseball, soccer, etc. Only black-dominated sports like basketball and football have collegiate eligibility requirements @Redeem87
Most American colleges don't have hockey. There's what 20 tops. Most players that play in non age restricted sports rarely begin in the pros. A lot are developed in the sport equivalent of the minors. The issue is mute because the cba was to agreed by the nbapa in 2005 for more money for vets. Renegotiate to 18 when the cba expires. Let the draftees decide. They should have a say, especially when college for 90% of athletes is a joke

Canadian colleges do have hockey and (Canadian or otherwise) hockey players don't play in them. They graduate high school and declare or else ply their trade in minor leagues until they feel they are good enough to declare. There is no collegiate eligibility requirement in hockey, tennis, soccer or any other white-dominated sport. The rest of your post is besides the point.

On one hand its b/c bball and football originally found popularity at the college level before the pro game was big

On the other hand all this "degree to fall back on" bullshyt is mad :mjpls:, In Europe footballers join teams' academies when they're like 16

I'd much rather play one year in college than deal with something like the mlb minor league system or d-league.

soccer in the us has a draft and you have to graduate college to join. Idgaf about tennis or golf and :russ: that you're using them as a crux of your argument

In the MLB you can go straight from High School, but if you go to college you have to stay at least 3 years.

It's basically a beneficial system for everybody except the high school prospects. Teams have an extra year to scout the players, veteran players have fewer new players coming into the league every year to take roster spots, and college ball gets access to star players for at least a year. I don't see it changing, because both the current players and the teams gain from the way things currently are.

I don't think it's about race like you assume I think it's the fact that basketball and football are HUGE for the NCAA and baseball and Hockey aren't and there's probably some under or over the table agreement. Or maybe it's racial shyt idk
