Maybe it's cause I made beats in my college days, but the thought of covering someone else's songs has always blown my mind.

I don't mind doing covers but some songs either reharmonize them or blend them in with songs that are in the same key with and/or with similar chord progressions. I once used Sugar Free and transitioned it into Bag Lady.

Yep. I don't mind playing covers because its easy money especially in you have corporate clientele. I'm talking $2500 - 3000 for a 1 hour set where you're playing familiar songs in the background as a 3 or 4 piece band. I play keys and sax BTW. I find most people I find that play covers are hobbyists.

Is music itself a gig tho? I can understand it then.

Yep, depending on the type of gig (weddings or corporate) the client will ask for specific songs unless you're a local headliner and they're familiar with the music you play. You definitely have to know your audience. Some venues expect you to "play it like the record" others you have more liberty, including throwing in some originals.
