Don't Believe the Hype
I'll occasionally here an announcer in various sports comment on how a particular city has a high sports IQ or are considered "smart fans." I believe this designation is usually reserved for knowledge of the rules of the game; however, shouldn't this quality extend further into other realms?

For instance, wouldn't "smart" fans realize sometimes rebuilding is necessary? Therefor, allowing their beloved franchise's GMs to make the appropriate moves, which may take two, three, or four years to manifest, instead of being pressured by media/fans to mortgage the teams future for the slight possibility of immediate success?

The "win now" mentality can be costly, both financially and successfully. Shouldn't "smart fans" know this?

Yea, I'm calling out some NY fans. Note: I root for the Yanks, Knicks, and Rangers.

I think NY fans are largely classless morons, but not because of some non-definitive hostility towards rebuilding. Good moves are good moves, and bad moves are bad moves. Youth is an overrated variable, and its one that is psychologically comforting to some, because they can hang on to this sometimes false idea that they are building a winner, because the team is "young" and they're getting high picks in a crapshoot lottery every year, rather than having to deal with the pressure and stress of having expectations to win in current time.

Look at all the NBA teams that get stuck on the lottery treadmill for years and years. There are many different ways to "rebuild"

Go to most of these NY teams message boards and I think most are fairly knowledgeable...esp the ones that post frequently.

Take the Revis trade for example...most saw it as a necessary step to begin the Jets rebuild and paying a CB 16 mill a year was crazy.

I use to think all Philly fans were obnoxious morons but after working with a good number of them, I've come to see that they are just obnoxious fans who are quite knowledgeable about their teams and sports in general. They just are bit more passionate than your avg fan

I'd say no. Unless you consistently read every fan forum and every sports blog comments pages, you can't judge an entire fan base on how knowledgeable or how obnoxious they are. Even if you did, you'd be seeing only the ones who have time to kill during the day to even spend on message-boards. You'd only be able to judge the squeaky wheels of the bunch. That leaves out a lot of fans that go across all spectrums.

I get better information regarding my teams from reading fans opinions than actual beat writers.

Of course the ATL
Depends on the market. In Atlanta, I find fans of college football, NFL & basketball are VERY knowledgeable, but b/c people have preconceived ideas about ATL & our fans, we don't get the credit we deserve for really knowing our shyt.

No. The announcers are referring to the fans in the arena/stadium. They aren't accounting for messageboard posters or radio show callers. Knick fans are no different than any other fans. You got smart ones, you got dumb ones, you got homers. I'm confused on how you feel you're calling Knick fans out tho. What are we supposed to be in rebuild mode now or something?

I think that the loudest reactionaries historically paint the fanbase their color.

Smart New York fans were excited about the team 3 years ago, when it was based on chandler, felton, gallo - they were youngish, cheap, exciting, and they were assets.

They were unruly in the years prior when they were forced to deal with contracts of Allan Houston, Eddy Curry, Jerome James, and a lack of draft picks squandered with zero results to show for it.

You either give fans hope, or you give them results - and if you give them neither... they get pissed.

What happens is a few notable celebrities, sports journalists, or public figures emerge from a city and celebrate its sports teams and their legacy. Somehow, the city then becomes known for such enthusiasm, even though the vast majority of residents are pretty indifferent to the goings on of professional sports organizations.

A good author or journalist has the ability to frame sports into an expression of poetry, most of these journalist come from Chicago, NY, LA, or Boston.

And that's all.
