The biggest/most respected artists in the genre usually portray a life that most of their listeners can't relate to.

Look @ that Pusha and Hov song which is the most poppin' thread at the moment.

I like it when they make relatable music yes, as it can probably touch you on a deeper level.

Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
do you prefer when a rapper is relatable ??

It's all relatable to me. When it ain't I use it as a metaphor to my life.

Instead of servin work, I'll relate it to myself serving these loans out:yeshrug:

And a lot of times I know dudes that went through the shyt so I see my friends in the music.

Not necessarily but its a good trait for an artist to have. There are plenty of artists that i dont relate to at all and thats fine. I dont relate to every movie or tv show I watch either.

Yeah its nice if I can relate to the music, but it's not necessary. However, at the same time its cool to have music where you don't necessarily relate but the music helps you understand/imagine. For example, I can't relate to Eminem talking about white trailer trash lifestyle, or kool g rap talking about going on drug mob heists but it's nice (when executed properly) when they can take me to that place through their words. It can keep the music intriguing like watching a movie.

would y'all say that Slick Rick is relatable ???
Yes, he's got a bunch of songs that would be relatable to people, Hey Young World, A Love That's True, Sittin In My Car, 2 Way Street, Teenage Love, The Moment I Feared, I Shouldn't Have Done It, All Alone No-One To Be With etc.
