Do you see a scenario where an NFL HC who doesn’t win a Super Bowl Makes the HOF going forward?

There are guys in the HOF with no rings like George Allen or Bud Grant but they coached in an entirely different time and era.

I’ve heard people argue someone like Andy Reid would’ve been a HOF if he never won a title, or current Kyle Shanahan will eventually make it without one and I don’t see it.

This is actually a good question, and after looking up the coaches that have been inducted without winning one, it kind of goes along with my line of thinking.

You have Bud Grant, George Allen, Paul Brown, Dan Coryell, Sid Gillman, and Marv Levy.

-Gillman and Brown were around early on in the Super Bowl era, and Brown had won multiple Championships before the merger.

-Coryell and Allen are the two here I don't really get how they are in, but I'm open to listening to arguments. I get that Coryell had some lasting impact with his offensive scheme and that he had support of former coaches to get in, but doesn't seem like someone that is THAT worthy of the highest honor.

-When you get to Grant and Levy, those are the types of coaches with their careers where I think a coach in today's game could get in. They got to numerous Super Bowls, but didn't win. Not talking just one or two Super Bowls, but four or more. Levy had some damn tough competition, and you can't knock him for losing to those 90's Cowboys teams.

It does seem like most of the top coaches in today's NFL have won a Super Bowl though. You have Reid, Tomlin, McVay (not a huge fan),and Carroll.

You don't see it because you only value winning as the be all and end all. Consistency over a period of time (always making playoffs and/or doing it with different teams) and Innovation (Are they creative or just a clipboard merchant) are other measurements to consider.

You have to give innovators their due. Otherwise the sport (any sport) doesn't grow and stays the same. The problem with sports is that there far too many conservatives and copycats and not enough free thinkers and risk takers. More Freedom Fighters less Terrorist.

Coryell was a great offensive mind but he wasn’t actually some great overall HC.

What I always thought was why isn’t reeves in but Grant and Levy are

Shouldn’t winning a title be the “be all end all” for a HC?

I feel like if you didn’t win you better be some all time innovator and pioneer.

How can one say that? Do they mean if he lost 5 SB's? That's still HoF worthy

Of course. I won't sit here and act like I saw a ton of them. I recognize other coaches really pushed for Coryell to get in, so I understand that. You definitely need innovators.

Every coach takes the job to win apart from The Cowboys HC.

I know he eventually won in the end with another team. But Dungy's Tampa 2 has a greater impact on the game than Gruden winning the title with them. So even if Dungy didn't win a SB he deserved to be recognised for how he helped evolve the game.

No assistant coaches have been inducted other than being selected as part of the "Awards of Excellence".

With that being said, does Spags get selected to that?

I would look at it the other way. What recent super bowl winning coach won't get into the HOF?

If McVay stopped coaching after this year, would he go into the HOF? I mean if you just show yourself sitting next to him at starbucks you can probably be the head coach of the Dolphins by next Thursday.

Absolutely not because anybody could get hot and win one.

What is more impressive, McVay winning one super bowl or Levy coaching a team to 4 straight? Levy didn't win one but he put himself in position to win 4. I think there is a 0% chance McVay could ever get to 4 straight super bowls. Not patient enough and doesn't strike me as the type of coach who can keep a group of players that focused for that long. I am way more impressed with Levy getting to 4 in a row than with McVay getting to 2 and winning one.
