A backpack rapper is someone who was not necessarily involved in the streetlife. They saw it and/Or have friends who were in it, but they themselves did not live it.

backpack rapper-
Person who dislikes Mainstream and Commercial rap a lot.
Person who raps about real life shyt that matters and has experienced, rarely about pimping hoes/having millions/selling immense ammounts of drugs/murdering random people for no apparent reason or motive.Person who is true to himself while rapping and uses his head and heart to write not only a pen and meaningless words.

I view backpack rap as any rap that isn't gangsta based or heavily influenced by gangsta. Back when gangsta shyt was the most popular hip hop stuff by far it was good to just describe "everything else" but now the genre is too diverse and that term is real broad now.

So I would consider them all backpackers cause I don't think any one of them considers themselves a gangsta at heart or rap about it even though a few of them have said they were in songs.

Na... I see Cole and Kendrick closer to Nas and Pac type rappers....not that they're on that level. But just because they discussed personal issues/struggles, that doesn't make them backpack. You could hear Nas/Pac's influence in Cole and Kendrick's music.

Just because Andre 3000 doesn't talk about busting his guns...that doesnt make him backpack. Dude made "Hey Ya" for god sake.
How many backpack rappers do you know that go diamond?

I don't know much about Chance other than he's a bit of a weirdo.

You have to come up with a different term for someone like Chance, J. Cole....festival rapper maybe.

If Chance came out in 02-05 he would definitely be a backpacker. Kanye is the foremost backpack rapper but he came out in a time where the game was mostly street shyt, club music, or Houston influenced so it was easier to notice the contrast.

What you could consider a backpacker today fits in more because of social media and streaming services shedding more spotlight.

It's hard to consider people like Kendrick, Cole or Chance backpack rappers because "backpack" (this is about to sound funny as fukk) to gives the idea of secrecy, like a vice, thesee nikkas I bump ain't cool enough to make it known, so I keep it in my backpack. Or as the rapper, these bars ain't cool enough, ain't thuggish enough, so this notebook gotta stay hidden in my backpack. So if them nikkas came out 10 years ago, yeah. Kanye opened that door for them.

No, that's not what backpack rap meant, you must have been born in the 90s.
Backpack rap was grimy shyt like BCC. An offshoot of traditional NYC hardcore, and a backlash to jiggy mafioso shyt. Then cacs made their version. #newblacks combine the aesthetic...and 3stacks stole his whole swag from Freestyle Fellowship/Heiro and put a twang on it. Kinda like Lil Wayne's mixtape run = Philly mixtape rap for total idiots x southern accent.
J Cole and Kendrick are the industry's version of real rappers. They make good music but truly don't have a story to tell outside of their rap personas of "everyman".

Cole is a backpack rapper. There's not too many I would consider a backpack rapper. Chance sold weed back in the day to buy studio time
