Lightning is complex. Lightning is just an electrical current right? What happens in the cloud is that there is a separation of (+) and (-) particles within the cloud. Positively charged particles rise to the top and negatively charged particles rest towards the bottom. The ground (earth) is a good conductor and because of induction, will become positively charged. A potential difference between the bottom of the cloud and the ground creates electric field lines that run from hi to low
