Ignorance is how we got here. Sigh.

It's probably what Trump thinks, too.
(Using "thinks" in its loosest possible meaning.)
3/35

welshrarebit.bsky.social
Whatever he himself thinks, it’s certainly what he wants his supporters to think.
4/35

dappleathome.bsky.social
What’s even funnier is that he thinks that even if China paid the $30, our companies would pass along the savings!
5/35

wren.im
Wouldn't China just increase the cost anyway to compensate?

what, do you think they're trying to run a solvent business or something?

The Republicans sold education down the river 50 years ago. They would rather everyone be stupid than have black people be smart.

psychopete.bsky.social
There's got to be way to make them understand simple contests. Maybe like this: if you had a lemonade stand and your mommy raised your cost of supplies to $1.30 from $1, would you then need to charge more or less for your lemonades? Maybe they would understand that?
10/35

margieisblue.bsky.social
If we could make them understand simple concepts we wouldn't have a felon for president and be trying to save democracy, but I appreciate your efforts.

Trump is intentionally using tariffs because they are notoriously difficult to explain, consumers don’t always see them, and he can pass the blame to others.
Also, it creates a slush fund so he can build a new ballroom and fund his secret police (ICE)

They only seem to be a difficult concept for the completely ignorant.

“The completely ignorant” = MAGA & Trump voters.

Rule of thumb: tariffs never make anything cheaper.

Start calling them sales taxes on imports, then maybe the idiots will understand

People are really this smart

. Old George Carlin joke ." Think of how smart the average person is and then consider half the population isnt even that smart .

Not to change the subject, who else has seen the propaganda bullshyt ad with Kristi Noem asking illegals to contact them at a "government" website?? They say they wanna help but my guess is they wanna know where you are so they can come get you. Trump's grabbing at straws since he's polling at 32%.

Exactly.

Wendy's briefly offered a 1/3 lb burger that was cheaper than McDonalds 1/4 pounder but then soon lost the competition because too many customers thought that 1/4 was bigger than 1/3. Likewise, voters will keep voting against their interests, no matter what! A passing IQ test may be needed to vote.

Good thing he didn't identify his brother-in-law by name. Trump might have given him a cabinet position.

Trump is functionally illiterate. I doubt he has ever purposely opened a book. I'm shocked he hasn't ruled Gutenberg an enemy of the state.

We have probably found the limit of human intelligence, but I don’t think we have completely plumbed the depths of human stupidity.
28/35

rapidlydownhill.bsky.social
To be fair. I think that’s how Trump understands it to work, too.

This is why the Orange Menace and his fellow Republicans love the uneducated and are trying to destroy our education system. You can come right out and explain something to them but they still won't understand even the simplest of concepts so they'll just believe what their preferred politicians say
32/35

siderealcryptid.bsky.social
What's really sad is that he has grabbed some of the very educated, too. My parents are educated people who used to encourage learning and critical thinking. They now justify everything Trump et al. do.
If you're predisposed to cult thinking, you will wind up in a cult, no matter your education...
33/35

sirlizard.bsky.social
Sad, but true. I think it's easier for the uneducated and weak-minded to be drawn in, but I guess if a demagogue's rhetoric matches a person's beliefs/fears/prejudices/etc., then the propaganda and lies will take the place of provable facts, debunking of lies, and (not so common) decency.
34/35

crisafulli.bsky.social
It’s not surprising that people are confused. This stuff is actually pretty confusing, and that’s exactly what they want. When the truth is obfuscated and difficult to understand, lies are more easily accepted and taken as true.

anymouse.bsky.social
Tariffs aren't confusing at all.
Tariffs are a sales tax. Who pays sales taxes?
