Back at Summerslam, the former World Heavyweight Champion faced off against WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg. The company had been building to a Ziggler/Miz match until a late change was made, which saw the former Universal Champion step in and fight the Smackdown star at the biggest party of the summer.
The match wasn’t long, but explosive from the opening bell, as the former World Heavyweight Champion popped off several superkicks before being laid out with the WWE HOF’s signature spear and jackhammer.
However, according to Dolph Ziggler, the match-up was supposed to be shorter with Goldberg simply connecting with the jackhammer and spear, but the 39-year-old made sure that he got some offense in before taking the loss (transcript courtesy of wrestletalk.com):
“As a kid [I was a fan] but as a grown up I see these guys and I’m like, ‘Okay I’m here to do business and do special things — I try not to be the fan. I find out what the business is and I’m like ‘Cool this is the moment.’ Says Ziggler to talkSPORT’s Alex McCarthy. “And having that like ‘You’re the guy to do this. To set the record straight and give this guy this fantastic match. I’m like, ‘Fantastic.’”
“Then they go, ‘it’s gonna be bell spear’ and I go ‘Come on.’ So I fought all day long, threatened to leave, threatened to leave. Do anything I can do — ‘Give me two damn minutes!’ And I got a minute, whatever, what are you gonna do?”
