Groundbreaking consultation to explore elevating the Creole language beyond informal use
“Legitimizing Creole: From Vernacular to Vehicle of Identity, Education, and Development” will be the theme of the upcoming Creole Language National Consultation 2025, hosted by Creole Heartbeat in partnership with the Ministry of Education, KEK, the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus, and Alliance Française. The event is scheduled for Thursday, October 16, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM taking place at the UWI Open Campus in Roseau, Dominica, said a media statement from the group.
A unique and innovative aspect of the consultation, according to the organizers, is that it will bring together key stakeholders from across the Creole-speaking regions—including Haiti, Martinique, Trinidad, Dominica, Guadeloupe, and St. Lucia—in a collaborative forum focused on the future of Creole languages.
Under the umbrella of the central theme, the importance of elevating Creole from everyday speech to a recognized and respected language integral to regional identity, cultural pride, and socio-economic progress will come into focus.
Attendees will include linguists, educators, policymakers, cultural figures, and community representatives. The gathering seeks to explore strategies for increasing recognition and integration of Creole in educational systems, government policies, and broader societal development. Organizers from Creole Heartbeat emphasize that Creole has historically thrived as the language of families, storytelling, and local communities, however, ” It is now time to position it as a language of progress — one that belongs in our classrooms, boardrooms, and national development strategies.”
Working to preserve and promote Creole as a fundamental element of Caribbean heritage is Creole Heartbeat’s broader initiative, says the team. Through this event, which represents one leg of the movement, the organization is calling for a broader acknowledgment of its vital role in shaping progress and empowering Caribbean nations.
Supporting partners in this pioneering effort include the Ministry of Education, KEK, UWI Open Campus, and Alliance Française. Media outlets such as Q95, Multisolutions, and Dominica News Online will provide coverage to highlight the significance of this landmark consultation.
