Donald Trump ranted at length today during a Reno campaign stop about how “soft” he believes the game of football has become, pointing to last night’s Steelers-Bengals game as an illustration of how player-safety rules are ruining America.

So I’m watching the game yesterday. What used to be considered a great tackle, a violent, head-on, violent. If that was done by dikk Butkus, they’d say he’s the greatest player... if that was done by Lawrence Taylor, it WAS done by Lawrence Taylor and dikk Butkus!...and Ray Nitschke, right? You used to see these tackles, and it was incredible to watch. Now they [effeminate voice] tackle.. head on head collision... fifteen yard penalty. The whole game is all screwed up!

Trump brought up sex offender Lawrence Taylor multiple times as a paragon of NFL excellence, and stated he doesn’t watch the NFL as much as he used to because “the referees, they want to throw flags so their wives see them at home.”

Trump did note one positive about the NFL: his friend, Tom Brady.

Making sure football players don't become mentally fukked is soft?

This, lol. Are people seriously unaware that football players were beating their families and murdering themselves because they were so mentally fukked up from playing? It's not soft to try to protect players and their families. :heh: I think sometimes people forget that NFL players are human beings with loved ones and that in the end, it's just a game.

Guess it's soft for military personnel to wear bullet proof vests and for cars to have airbags.

He's right about the refs attention whoring. But the NFL had no choice but to gradually legislate the head shots out as much as possible.

dumb rhetoric. boxing is just a game too, how come boxers aint beatin their families and murdering themselves ? and they take beatings just as bad. you are stretching cause and effect trying to match them together. football was always a violent physical game, everyone understood the impact. let's cut all the bullshyt about players not understanding the impact football would have on their body.

Studies have shown a strong correlation between violent behavior and CTE, this includes Boxers who have been in domestic disputes before (Tyson, Mayweather). But even if you are ignoring domestic disputes there are still other mental health issues boxers and NFL players face (Alzheimer, Parkinson's, etc.). So its not like some random a$$hole just pulled the study out of nowhere on brain damage correlated to other health and personal issues.

And yes we know these athletes signed up for the sport knowing SOME of the consequences but the lawsuits the NFL faced were from former players who were not fully aware of the health issues or provided with better measures to have protection from these injuries and later on in life had professionals (Dr. Bennet Omalu) point out health issues they faced.

IT is what it is fam, you want NFL to stay alive a little longer then some things are gonna have to be sacrificed (i.e. seeing an athletes head almost taken off with no repercussion)
