Greetings, I hope you're doing well.
A few people have asked me why I felt the need to address the recent push by the state of Pennsylvania to take away Umar Johnson's license. I can only say that I addressed it for the same reasons I addressed the situations with Tavis Smiley, Roland Martin and others: My podcast is about black men and women and issues that are of concern to black people around the world.
With regard to Umar, I presume that he wanted people talking about his situation because he was the first to discuss the matter on social media and with a subsequent video. Given that our podcast, Intellectual Chocolate, covers the black community, I felt it would be worth discussing.
I can't say that I speak with any sort of concern for whether or not the person I'm speaking of likes or dislikes what I'm saying. I only speak with a quest to find the truth, and to encourage my people to use critical thinking as we shape the future of our community.
I've personally defended Umar Johnson in the past on multiple occasions, I gave money to his school and I have (along with quite a few elders I've spoken with) tried to help him. I even lost a friend defending him a few years ago, and I defended Umar after his interview with Roland Martin.
Honestly, I regret defending him, not because I believe he is inherently evil or needed him to reciprocate, but because I feel that there is something off-balance psychologically. I won't tell you what to think, I only encourage you to watch his videos for yourself and come to your own conclusions.
With what I've seen both in public and behind-the-scenes (most of the public didn't see "the church incident" in Washington DC, which I hope witnesses will openly discuss) I can't defend him anymore. The evidence speaks for itself - the man is his own worst enemy and his ego is probably what will ruin him.
That's my honest to god truth. If you want to hear my podcast about the topic, you can visit this link. Anyone is welcome to disagree with me, but just know that I am here to speak the truth, no matter where it lies. Umar could have been one of the greatest leaders in the history of all mankind, but something just isn't quite right.
Please take care and have an awesome day.
Sincerely,
Dr Boyce Watkins
