with that new sh!tty drake song, his 3rd album, still the same flows, same topics, same feeling sorry for himself for being rich and having girls who dont really love him ( cant blame them for viewing him as a simp).
still, i cant help but notice the coli jizzing themselves over the song like its Eric B For President or some isht. here is what we do know about hip hop history. some overly excited and clueless people have always forced crappy music on us, and bullied people into liking certain isht. if enough people with access to media say something is great, well i guess i better fall in line lest someone call me a hater.
with time, we see the errors of our ways though. remember when everyone was sayng eminem was the new Bob Dylan? yep, big time music critics in Rolling Stone and Spin and The Village Voice used to say that nonsense. How he was the most important music artist of our time. Dude music dont hold up whatsoever.
or remember how just a few years back, a million Odd Future think pieces popped up, by intelligent folk, tryna deconstruct basic homophobia, racism, sexism and pass it off as deep?
anyway now we have drake, who is being supported by hacky hip hop journalists like Elliot Wilson and MTV. Dude to me cannot rap. i consider the following criteria important to be a great rapper:
lyrics-is drake a good lyricist. i will say he is solid. he is coherent. dont ever underestimate that. but you then have to move to beyond that and say something interesting and transcend the regular isht. being coherent about how hard it is to be him is the most played out isht in rap ever.
flow-this is the dude biggest weakness to me. its the same flow since he came on the scene. think Snoop with Doggystyle, think Rakim on Follow The Leader. Think Jay on RD, Nas on It Was Written. this ninja Drake got the least interesting flow of a top tier rapper ever. its a relentless drone.
vocal tone- drake is almost as hard on the ears as cannibus.
i just dont see dudes greatness. good hooks, good beats, but thats it.
