Drake Says New York Is Irrelevant To Music Industry Success
The Toronto rapper explains how he represents his hometown.

Drake was featured in the first installment of Fader's "Obey Your Thirst" documentary series sponsored by Sprite.

In the video, Drake says that artists no longer need to go to New York city to become successful.

"All these guys that are like, 'You gotta go to New York and make it happen,' no you don't, man," he says. "That's dead now. Do it the way The Weeknd did it. Do it the way PARTYNEXTDOOR did it. Do it the way I did it. Do it from where you're at."

The Toronto rapper says that his hometown is one of his main motivations.

"All I did was find a way to make people proud of our city," he says. "The artists from our city, their whole objective was to get out. So I just had to flip that way of thinking."

Drake says that it is important to stand out in the industry by being transparent.

"Rap music has always been about storytelling," he says. "I've never seen the sense in crafting a story that isn't my own. Just rapping is not really that impressive anymore. There just has to be more. You have to be a multi-layered artist. My father was like, 'If you really wanna shock the world, you'll sing and rap.' I was like, 'You're crazy. This is like the worst idea possible.'"

Future "Obey Your Thirst" interviews are slated to feature Nas, Vince Staples and Isaiah Rashad.
