Drake has signed with ASCAP, the companys VP of Rhythm & Soul Membership, Nicole George-Middleton, told Billboard exclusively today (April 1).

"For me, a big part of making music is getting the opportunity to work with people I love, trust and respect," Drake says. "As an organization run by music creators, ASCAP represents a whole community of kindred spirits. Joining ASCAP was just a natural choice for me because I know my music is in the best possible hands."

Drake is joining a roster that includes his longtime friend and producer, Noah "40" Shebib. He had previously been with BMI.

"We are really excited to build on our longstanding relationship with Drakes team," George-Middleton added. "Working from the beginning with his collaborators Noah '40' Shebib and Boi-1da, it felt only right to have Drake join the ASCAP family."

"Were thrilled to now officially count Drake among our many multi-talented members," ASCAP EVP of Membership Randy Grimmett mentioned. "This new addition only strengthens ASCAPs reputation as home to the worlds greatest songwriters. We cant wait to see whats to come for Drake in the future."

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP, /'æskæp/) is an American not-for-profit performance-rights organization (PRO) that protects its members' musical copyrights by monitoring public performances of their music, whether via a broadcast or live performance, and compensating them accordingly.
ASCAP collects licensing fees from users of music created by ASCAP members, then distributes them back to its members as royalties. In effect, the arrangement is the product of a compromise: when a song is played, the user does not have to pay the copyright holder directly, nor does the music creator have to bill a radio station for use of a song.
