Pragmatism = bad
You guys are starting to sound like the conservatives you detest.
Look, the jig is up. Pragmatism is moderation. A "progressive who gets things done" is just a round about way of saying I'm a moderate.
The problem with you people who applaud pragmatism is that you only applaud it on issues that YOU are willing to see incremental increases in. We know in the arena of civil rights, pragmatism is just racist protectionism. The reconstruction era is pragmatism. State by state abolition of slavery is pragmatism. Plessy v Ferguson to Brown v Board of Ed is pragmatism. Truman had to be forced to send troops to enforce school desegregation because he was pragmatic. Martin damn near had his foot on Lyndon B Johnson's neck over pragmatism. The first black president in 2008 - that's the result of pragmatism. The first woman president (possibly) in 2016 - that's the result of pragmatism.
But that's the accepted evil of pragmatism.
Could you imagine if a Republican or any male spoke pragmatically about equal pay for women or paid maternity leave? OH WAIT THEY ARE AND THEY'RE CALLED OUT FOR BEING ON THE WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY.
The problem with proponents of pragmatism isn't the theory, it's that they choose to apply the theory selectively. Just admit you're a moderate, or you're scared of the end result of a progressive push. But don't hide behind the false narrative that your idea of pragmatism is common sense and the mature way to handle politics.
Whether you pragmatist want to admit it, conservative theory on things like gay rights and minimum wage are actually based on pragmatism. See another issue I have with pragmatist, is that they fail to see that the concept of "common sense" changes based on a person's perspective. So what's common sense and pragmatic to a gay rights proponent, ends up being a slippery slope to a religious conservative.
When the science and numbers are in support of the pragmatist, they'll push the idea of being on the right side of history and doing the right thing.
When the science and numbers are against the pragmatist, they'll argue that their opponent is idealistic and that affirming the opposing point of view pushes others away from the table.
Which way do you guys want it? Republicans/China/Russia/Saudi Arabia will incrementally make changes to their climate plans in a common sense way. Stop trying to force it down their necks, or you may push them away from table. Yeah incremental change at the pragmatic pace will not be enough to save the planet, but in regards to health care, education, and other social concerns, your vision of incremental change isn't enough to keep everyone in pace with the cost of living and that seems to be acceptable.
At least when the sea levels rise, we'll know you guys have the best life boats as they were built pragmatically and not in haste.
