So I've been searching on here to see if yall got a Dread thread but none that are active. I recently got my hair twisted and I want to know from those who have Locks. What's yall routine, what products you use and drying techniques etc.

:mindblown: Can't believe this thread flew under my radar. My apologies.

Been loc'd since early '09

By now my only real routine consists of 1 thorough wash and complete retwist per month, with an average of about 2-3 rinse n slight retwists thrown in randomly throughout the month.

The reason I have to do the random rinses throughout the month is because I am sweating profusely at least 4 times a week between Karate and my own personal workouts.
Letting that sweat dry and build up causes odor, over time. :scusthov:

The reason I have to add the light "maintenance retwist" sessions in there during the month is simply a result of the random rinses I have to do washing out my new growth/twists, making it look like I have a lil 'fro underneath my locs. :wtb:

Those retwist sessions take no time, as theyre not an actual full "retwist" and I generally don't even use anything on them during those, aside from a spray bottle of water and tea tree oil mixed. It's a light mix that doesn't build up, but is just strong enough to do a light maintenance session justice and have your locs looking fresh.

Initially, that all may sound like a lot of work but keep in mind a few things.

Everybody's road to locdom will be different. Where I have to add those extra rinses and retwists, you may not :yeshrug:
You also may not be a fan of doing your own, that's just my personal preference :yeshrug:
I have a weird grade of hair that doesn't take well to gels or waxes and I tend to have to use light oils and "lotions".
You may be good with certain waxes or gels.
There is so much more info out there and natural hair forums are everywhere; but I applaud you starting a topic about it here. :salute:
And I would've expected a much bigger response. :dwillhuh:
There has to be more than a few people here with locs who can provide a lot more info and tips. I'll continue to provide as much as I can as time allows.

Honestly, I had to use beeswax in the beginning as well.. probably for about my first 3-4 twists. Fortunately after about 3 months they were strong enough to hold with gels.
Fast forward about two more years and I had chucked the gels altogether and went to light natural products only. Been on those ever since.

It really depends on your texture. My hair is like tiny pen springs. They clump together naturally but most starter locs need a product with hold in the beginning.

I was pretty low maintenance with mine.

Also, learning to twist your own locs saves you so much money in the long run.

So nobody got dread tips or nothing?
:aicmon::upsetfavre:
It looked like a thread that "you dread car maintenance" and not "dreadlock maintenance tips" going by the title.
The other thing is there are lot of white people here who don't know about afro hair care.

The initial parting is very important if you want to get nice styles and braids once they're longer. I got mine redone about 3 times, finally got my ex to do it, she's one of the best in the city. You want to go the best in your area for your initial twist. You want to leave about an inch so you can style get a nice edge up. The smaller thinner the locs, the more styles you can do. I finally got my locs braided, they looked amazing, but they were too tight. I'll post pics belows.

Take Biotin, helps your hair grow.

I workout and play ball a lot, so I sweat and dry my locs out. My ends have broken off, Ive lost about a 2 inches for real.
:mjcry:

March 2014 This is after getting my ex to redo them, she's a beast. They're small, but once the loc'd they got twice the size.

This is last month with my old boo. I like letting them hang when I haven't had them done in a couple of weeks.

Dude in Maryland pushed my edge up back but it was sharp.
