-- New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees said he was being serious when he said last week that he wanted to play until he was 45.
Brees, 35, said he knows that playing in the NFL for another decade wouldn't be easy.
"I'm serious. I'm not delusional," Brees said after practice on Tuesday at the Greenbrier resort. "I know that that's something that would be extremely difficult to do. Not many have done it....It could be done, but a lot of things have to fall into place."
Brees said his performance will dictate whether that sort of longevity is achievable.
"I know it's one year at a time. It's, 'What have you done for me lately?'...But why not push the envelope a little bit?" Brees said. "It's certainly not going to be easy. I try to play this game like a kid...It is a serious business, and they don't keep you around if you don't play well."
Brees also addressed the joking tweet he sent on Sunday.
"Obviously, I was having fun with that one. We get random drug tests throughout the year. We always joke around that it's always after a really good game you get drug-tested 'randomly,'" said Brees, who made air quotes with his fingers when he said randomly.
Brees said he was "completely joking" about any implication that he was targeted for the drug test.
