I got a 2 year old and a 10 month old. My own father left when I was around 2 so I was raised mainly by my mother. Stepdad was there but he wasn't that fatherly presence that helped prepare my siblings and I for life so when I think about the future and what gems (the kind that stick with you) to pass to my kids, I feel like I'm missing something.

What are things from your father that you carry with you through life? Ain't even gotta be deep.

My dad, when I was four, slapped me in the face and told me "don't you dare think you're special. If you dropped dead today, the sun would continue to rise and the world would keep spinning. Don't you dare!" In a way he was right, but still, bestow lessons like this on your kids in a more suitable manner. :francis:

My fathers life is a gem and cautionary tale for me. Dont fall prey to the streets and waste your time and talent in the streets.

My pops is smart as fux. Hella handy. Can do electric, plumbing, mechanics and carpentry..can DJ. But he wasted all that doing drugs and going to jail. Got caught up in the hustle.

I use him as an example of what to avoid and what I didn't want my life to be like.

I speak with my dad once or twice a month, but everytime we speak, I feel he gives me some gems. My pops is my hero, man. Been there with me since I first opened my eyes in this world. I give him major credit for my successes.

Taught me from an early age, you’ll get far more respect standing on your values and beliefs, than being wishy washy and following trends. Don’t be a pushover. If you don’t like something or agree with it, don’t just follow along with it.

Never stop learning, and learn as many skills as you can. Be good with your hands. Pops is a corporate engineer, yet can fix anything.

Family and legacy is important. Good/great families stick to this. A lot of great men out here come from good, stable families. Made sure my siblings and I knew and became well acquainted with other members of the family.

Protect the women and children of the family. Seen my folks argue from time to time, but the way he was with my mama showed me he cared; especially now that I’m an adult man. I’ve seen him stand up for me as a child, and he also taught me that you have to stand up to a bully as folks prey on the weak.
