What's a dubplate?

basically it's like a recorded promo or advertisement for lack of a better word for a soundsystem (crew of selectors) ...it became a cost effective tool during the late 80's..

as soundsystems found it too costly and difficult at times to book artists to appear live and "promote" the sound at clashes (battle) especially on the road since most soundsystems are mobile.

this particular one is a dubplate recorded for the infamous STONE LOVE soundsystem outta Kingston Jamaica....the vocals are by the late great Nitty Gritty fresh off of an overseas tour in europe ("fresh from london!!") and is in high demand to cut dubplates because of his unique voice and experience in sparring with acts such as nicodemus, supercat and soundsystems such as Sturmas and Killamanjaro......

to this day...Stone Love still uses this dubplate that was recorded over 20 years ago............

i remember going to see Stone Love play at a dance in georgia..and being determined NOT to leave until this chune got played!!!!...

always remember hearing it pon dubplate cd's and cassettes but never got to hear it "LIVE"!!


waited till 4 am inna di bumbahole mawning to hear Billy Slaughter of Stone Love play this, knowing i had to be to work at 7 that morning....

but it was WORTH IT in the end............

also i should EDIT the thread title..because it actually should read "SPECIAL"...because that particular Dubplate cut by Stone Love probally could be considered a "SPECIAL" (Exclusive) because i've yet to HEAR ANYOTHER SOUNDSYSTEM PLAY NITTY GRITTY over that particular riddem.....

By definition all modern day dub plates are unique since the names of the selector and sound system are integrated in the tune. Also some dubplates are used only once. Eg Tony Matterhorn @ annual world clash held @ pier one Mobay
