Elderly California couple to be evicted from their home after falling victim to grandson’s scam

An elderly California couple may be evicted from their home of 56 years after allegedly falling victim to a scam from their grandson.

Hank and Helen Kawecki's home is being foreclosed after their grandson, Chadd Moore, swindled them out of their deed and defaulted on nearly $500,000 in loans against their Thousand Oaks house, FOX station KTTV reported. Additionally, Moore allegedly sold the house out from under them.

"I'm hoping something will happen that we can get it back," Hank Kawecki told KTTV. "I don't know how, but you never know."

The Kaweckis were supposed to be evicted from their home Wednesday, but a judge Tuesday afternoon granted them a stay for another 60 days, neighbor Doug Emerson told the Daily News.

Emerson said he still doesn't know if his neighbors will be able to get their house back, but during the stay they'll be able to live in their house rent-free.

"The (opposing) attorney … constantly talks about all the money they're losing," Emerson told The News. "But the judge … made it absolutely clear that (the Kaweckis are) not going to pay any rent. They are the victims in this."

About two years ago, the Kaweckis needed to take out a loan and Moore offered to help. Moore proposed they put the house in his name while he supported them financially for the rest of their lives.

Instead, Moore mortgaged the property, defaulting on three loans against the house totaling almost $500,000, and put the house up for sale.

After taking out the first loan, Moore promised to give his grandparents the money in monthly payments, but after a few months he stopped, the Thousand Oaks Acorn reported.

Moore allegedly spent all the money in Las Vegas, CW station KTLA reported.

At times, Moore lured his grandparents out of their home while realtors hosted open house events to potential clients.

Emerson first noticed something was amiss in January when a realtor knocked on their door and introduced her clients as their new neighbors, the Ventura County Star reported.

Emerson, who knew that the Kaweckis planned to live in that house for the rest of their lives, discovered Moore's misdeeds and confronted the Kaweckis about it. He helped his neighbors hire a lawyer to file a lawsuit against Moore and set up a GoFundMe page last month to help them pay for legal fees and moving costs.

As the page approached its $50,000 goal Tuesday evening, Emerson raised the goal to $100,000.

Moore's attempted sale of the house fell through after the Kaweckis brought the lawsuit and police are investigating if there was any criminal wrongdoing.

Financial fraud is the most common type of elder abuse, KTTV reported. About 50-70% of cases involve family members.
