I don't think so in this context. In that era, it was actually short for Gale or Gayle. Both were crazy common back then.


It's kinda like how James is the official name but Jim or Jimmy is the more popular version. Or in that specific era Sally was incredibly popular, but the official name is Sarah/Sara
