DURHAM, N.C. — A Duke University student has admitted to hanging a noose around a tree on the school’s campus, according to the university.
Duke released the following statement Thursday about the incident:
An investigation by Duke University Police and the school’s Office of Student Affairs has resulted in the identification of a Duke student who has admitted being responsible for placing a noose in a tree on the Duke campus Wednesday.
The student is no longer on campus.
The individual’s name and other identifying details will not be released consistent with federal law (FERPA) that protects the privacy of educational records.
The student will be subject to Duke’s student conduct process. The university continues to review the circumstances of the incident to determine if additional individuals were involved.
Duke continues to coordinate with state and federal officials about potential criminal violations.
The noose was found hanging on a tree at the Bryan Center plaza Wednesday morning. It was made with a thin yellow rope.
A photo of the noose was posted on social media. Several students said the incident was linked to racially charged motivations.
The noose was removed from the tree at about 2:45 a.m. on Wednesday, according to an email from the Vice President for Student Affairs, Larry Moneta.
