A 20-year-old Commerce resident is facing charges of child endangerment after allegedly leaving her 22-month child unattended for more than 30 hours.
The woman, whose name has not been released pending her arraignment, was arrested Thursday afternoon. A manager of the Corners at Commerce apartment complex was posting an eviction notice at the suspect’s apartment when the manager heard the child crying. The manager then called the Commerce Police Department, who arrived to find the child inside of a bedroom in the apartment.
“The condition of the apartment was deplorable,” Commerce police said in a press release. “The apartment had no electricity and was extremely hot. At the time, the child was wearing soiled underwear covered with a department store plastic bag.”
The mother showed up to the apartment while officers were on the scene, and she was immediately arrested and booked for endangering a child, which is a felony.
“A detective with Commerce PD was called to the scene for further investigation, as well as an agent with Child Protective Services,” the release read. “During their investigation, detectives found out that the child was left unattended in the apartment from 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6, until the manager found him shortly after 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7.
