Surely in the 80's it was East, 90's it was West then from 2000 onwards or was the Dirty South. In fact I think the dirty south was producing the best music in the late 90's too..

I will point out that when creepin on da come up came out, nobody had a bigger buzz than bone thugs though. (Midwest)

However from a sales / style / longevity perspective who won looking at then to now ?

It can't be west right ? Kendrick is out on his own.
East has a say..Jay is the most succesful overall surely ?

But maybe the south has the biggest slew of artists overall now...
(Although its also home to some of the worst)

Tough one.

Ehh to early to determine. If the south can hold the rest of this decade they win

As you said each region has had about 10 years each

it's clearly, clearly the south....:wow:

If you count production as well, the neptunes and timbo are from VA, so the south gets a lot of the mid to late 90s too. Plus No Limit and Cash Money in the 90s..:damn: the south won this war y'all

If you wanna look at hit records, record sales and artists individual longevity it's clearly the East.

The south have it now, but there are not many classic records coming from them, just a few hit records from the current hot rapper and horrible record sales (with the exception of a handful).

I agree. And who the hell said that the 90s belonged to the west? Don't answer that question because it didn't.

Don't give me that shyt, every time we try to claim "South" these Deep South nikkas want to be all like "naw, yall to far up nawf"

But now we're magically part of the South when it comes to discussing how great the South is.

Outside of Death Row and it's affiliates the west wasn't really selling like that in the 90s.

To put it into perspective LL Cool J, who came out in '85, was still going 2-3x plat in the mid 90s. He wasn't even a major star on the east at that point.

NY held on until the late 90s, kinda disappeared for a while, then came back with 50 Cent. The west tapered off almost immediately after Death Row collapsed.

So to say the west was running the 90s isn't really accurate.

I said it did... But later considered that maybe the south had the best music in the late 90's.
I was not a master p / no limit fan at all by the way. Never liked any product they brought out apart from the 2 mac albums - but only because of his delivery. Everything from suave house or dungeon family was way beyond no limit from a production / longevity standpoint.

The west coast stuff was really prominent in my music collection in the 90's I know that much.
I had SCC before I bought Mobb Deep (hip-hop heads will get that)
I had every single g funk artist..
All the dangerous crew albums...
All death row... Etc etc. (Still got them)

Good point re L but he was pretty commerical to get those numbers.
I remember that def jam went to the west heavy... They got warren g... Richie rich, even jayo felony at one point....

Maybe I need to start my thread again...
However I still think that the wests run in the 90's was powerful.
Nobody could f*ck with the dogg pound / snoop / dre then Pac when he joined. Regulate was number 1. Big soundtracks with heavy west influences were popping up everywhere.
Think poetic justice, the show, above the rim...

Think that run really helped hip-hop become national
The majority of the artists today go pop to get numbers, have a singer on the hook. The hip-hop element is just 8 bars.

90% of the shyt you just said falls under the Death Row umbrella though.

Don't get me wrong, the west had a few artists, but the east coast is virtually impossible to beat just based on the sheer number of rappers that came out. For every 3-4 west coast rappers that went gold-plat during that era, I can name 20+ from the east that sold the same, or more. Outside of Death Row the west didn't have large cliques like Wu or Def Squad.
