LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Eric Wright, known to rap fans as Eazy-E, is using a federal racketeering law to sue Sony Music Entertainment, accusing the company of money laundering, extortion and conspiracy.
Wright, founder of N.W.A. and the Ruthless record label, claims in the lawsuit that Sony, band member Andre Young and others conspired to use force and threats to break recording contracts with Ruthless.The lawsuit, which seeks $54 million in damages, was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. He said Sony also infringed on Ruthless' copyright by banking money it made from music recorded by Young, known as Dr. Dre, including the soundtrack for the movie ''Deep Cover.'' Named as defendants in the suit, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, were Sony Music Entertainment; Death Row Records (owned by Andre Young, aka “Dr. Dre” of N.W.A, dikk Griffey, and Marion “Suge” Knight); Solar Records (operated as a joint venture between Sony, dikk Griffey and Virgil Roberts); Sony executives Tommy Mottola, Hank Caldwell, David Glew and Craig Sussman.
